NYSUT's Calling!

Expect a phone call soon from NYSUT - it's a poll regarding your opinions about the Friedrichs case and Agency Fee (Fair Share Dues).  Please take the time to answer the questions and provide NYSUT with the data they need to address the future of our Union.

Take Action

Go to the NYSUT Member Action Center

It takes no time!  Just click that link above.  Send faxes to your state legislators to oppose back-door vouchers in the name of "Education Investment Tax Credit."

It's a way to reduce the taxes collected by the State for public schools by siphoning monies off to private and parochial schools.

Here's what NYSUT Vice President Andy Pallotta has to say about it:

Introduced with the proposed budget, the Education Investment Tax Credit is a thinly disguised private school voucher scheme offered under the guise of charitable giving for education purposes. Individuals and corporations will be able to reduce their tax bills by sending what they would otherwise owe in taxes to a foundation or educational scholarship organization that will turn the money into a private school voucher or will subsidize tuition at both religious and non-religious private schools.

And the price tag? $170 million in the first year, alone!

Support Striking Teachers

Send an email of support to our Brothers and Sisters of the Shamokin, Pennsylvania Education Association

I have already sent an email to SAEA president Mary Yohe expressing the support of her Brothers and Sisters of the Bronxville Teachers' Association.  You might do the same.  Hopefully, our support will help them all stay warm on the picket lines this week.

Please be advised that Shamokin Area Education Association (SAEA)  (IU 16- Northumberland County) 183 Bargaining Unit members will be on strike starting Wednesday, January 20, 2016. The school board voted against the non-binding arbitration decision at their meeting this evening. SAEA voted on Thursday, January 14 to accept the non-binding arbitration decision, which favored SAEAs issues.  This will be a continuation of their first strike that went from September 8 to September 28, 2015. They returned to the classrooms on September 28 by court order. They have been working without a contract since 2013.  Main issues to date: the school board has rejected the Fact-Finder's decision, in which SAEA voted to accept, which then led to the strike in September. Now, the school board voted against the non-binding arbitration decision. SAEA are among the lowest paid educators in the state.

A BTA Publication

Be on the lookout for a new BTA publication, "In Solidarity," a review of our Union's work for the first few months of the 2015-2016 school year.  This, along with the brochure you received at the start of the year and the one-on-one outreach initiative, is a direct result of the planning meeting that was attended by more than 30 of us last June.  We are working to improve our Union communication.

Then, please provide David Katz with some feedback about it.
