As an employee, you may have a right to the presence and counsel of a union representative at a meeting where your conduct is being questioned and you reasonably believe disciplinary action may result. If you are in doubt about whether you are entitled to union representation, ask for it anyway.
"Weingarten rights" refer to an employee's right to be accompanied by a union or other representative at an employer-conducted interview that the employee reasonably believes may result in disciplinary action against him or her. Although the Weingarten case in which the U.S. Supreme Court first recognized this right involved private sector employees, the NYS legislature has passed legislation to give similar rights to public employees.

The BTA will be packing baskets to deliver to the women at Hope's Door Women's Shelter on Mother's Day.
Here's the email that Julia wrote to us:
Teachers, Aides, and Staff,
On Saturday, May 3rd ,the BTA will be assembling 10 Mother’s Day Baskets for women taking refuge at Hope’s Door, a women’s shelter in Westchester. The shelter has provided a “Wish List” of items to be included in the gift baskets (listed below).
Please let me know if you would like to contribute any of the items (and quantity). Please keep in mind that many of these women leave in the middle of the night with only the clothes on their backs, so providing a bit of luxury to these women would be greatly appreciated, especially on Mother’s Day.
If you would like to find out more about Hope’s Door you can look at their website: http://hopesdoorny.org/programs-and-services/
On Saturday, May 3rd at 10am in the Home Economics room, we will be assembling and decorating the gift baskets with all the donated items. That morning, we will also make flower pens, which will be included in the baskets. Please let me know if you are interested in helping putting together the baskets and making flower pend on Saturday, May 3rd.
These are the items on the “Wish List,” please let me know if you can donate (and quantity):
Loofah Sponge (10 needed)
Scented Body Wash (10 needed)
Hand Lotion (10 needed)
Nail Files (10 needed)
Nail Polish (10 needed)
Journal (10 needed)
A copy of your favorite book (with a personal inscription from you) (10 books needed)

All donations can be dropped off in my room B-111. If I am not in my room, please leave me a note with your name so that I know who left the items.
Really looking forward to being part of the reason why the women at Hope's Door smile on Mother's Day.
Thanks in advance for your generosity!
Have you been paying attention to the news around the start of the Mets season?
Daniel Murphy, an infielder for the New York Mets, is getting some heat from sportscasters for taking time to be with his wife and newborn son.
Major League baseball players are entitled to take up to three days paternity leave on the birth of a child. This right was collectively bargained for them by the Major League Baseball Players Association, the union that represents the players in their contract negotiations with Major League Baseball.
Here, in Bronxville, teachers do not have maternity or paternity leave, we have a collectively bargained child-rearing leave. Any parent can take time under the provisions of our contract to take care of a child.
Here is a case where the benefits of being a Bronxville teacher outweigh those of Major Lea
