BTA Meeting in the cafeteria.
See you there!
Tomorrow (Wednesday, May 30) 3:00
BTA Meeting in the cafeteria. See you there! NYSUT is a partner in the new statewide campaign, Educate NY Now! which debuted this week. The 12-month campaign addresses the growing education crisis in the state's public schools.
Isn’t it time for Albany to come up with a better approach to education reform than personal embarrassment and individual blame?
Take action now at the NYSUT Member Action Center to tell legislators to stop the public shaming of teachers and to protect our right to privacy! And share this message with your friends and colleagues! <http://locals.nysut.org/r.php?c/1d4z/bWFubmNsYW41QG9wdG9ubGluZS5uZXQ> Recent reports in tabloid newspapers included teachers’ names and personal information. This set off a flurry of unfair personal attacks and blatant misinformation about teachers. Take the case of one 6th grade teacher in New York City. When Teacher Data Reports were published in February, she found herself hounded by New York Post reporters. They rang her doorbell throughout the weekend. They pounded on her window. They proclaimed her the "city’s worst teacher." And all this despite accounts from her colleagues and peers that she is an excellent teacher in an excellent school. Unless Albany does something about it soon, we can expect more of the same. And share this message with your friends and colleagues! <http://locals.nysut.org/r.php?c/1d4z/bWFubmNsYW41QG9wdG9ubGluZS5uZXQ> In addition to sending a fax, you can make a personal phone call to the Governor and your legislators’ offices by calling 1-877-255-9417 . It is time for lawmakers to support legislation to protect the privacy rights of teachers with respect to their personnel records. The BTA extends condolences to Mary Schenck and her family on the loss of Mary's mother.
Christina Reidel is going to NYSUT's Committee of 100 lobbying day this week to speak to our legislators and represent us and our concerns. Here's what NYSUT says about the priorities for lobbying: The second of NYSUT’s annual grassroots lobbying events brings hundreds to Albany next week. With a month left in the legislative session, the union’s priorities are clearly drawn. The NYSUT volunteer lobbyists will demand that lawmakers: First and foremost, protect teacher privacy in evaluations; reform the tax cap law; pass the New York DREAM Act; and save Downstate Medical Center as a fully functional hospital, among other unresolved issues. Support Christina and NYSUT by going to the NYSUT MAC site to take action on all these issues; more letters and messages provide tremendous support to the lobbying efforts in Albany. Our total of $5712 and 2077 pounds of food collected makes the Bronxville Teachers' Association the second largest contributor to the Food Drive in Westchester and Putnam Counties.
Again - many thanks to Meg Weiss and Glenn Stockton for their work in organizing this collection. Dear Local Coordinator and Local President:
Thank you again for your participation in NYSUT’s Annual Food Drive, and especially to all the Coordinators for your help in running the Drive. We raised a total of $42,572.93 and collected 61,870 pounds of food for the Food Bank for Westchester, People to People, Inc, in Rockland County, and other local food banks in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland and Orange Counties! We could not have done this without you! What we have accomplished is so extraordinary that it almost cannot be believed. Thirty tons of food and enough money to purchase another thirty tons of food!! On behalf of all those for whom hunger is an unconscionable way of life, we who organize this food drive every year, thank you again and again. Truly important work that was needed and wanted was done here. Attached is the FINAL REPORT for the 2011-12 Food Drive. Please share these results with your members and thank them again for their generosity. Sincerely, NYSUT’s Food Drive Coordinating Committee: Sue Cotellessa and Cheryl Aguilar, NYSUT Staff Jeff Zuckerman, Clare Gorman, Edith Rosenblatt (Retirees) Bill Wienecke (Somers TA) Congratulations to Christine Dowd, who gave birth to a beautiful Baby girl yesterday.
