The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the IRS require that public employee unions conduct annual internal audits of finances, and file a report within 6 months of the conclusion of their fiscal year to both the membership and the AFT. Our fiscal year 2012-2013 ended on June 30, and we must begin the process to comply with these regulations. Audit committee members cannot be current officers of the BTA. It will require looking at how our money was spent during the previous fiscal year and informally examining our books. It is a vital function which will reassure the membership that their money is being carefully spent and monitored. I ask that you consider serving on this committee, and volunteer to meet with our treasurer, Chuck Yochim, to perform the audit on Monday, October 21 at 3 PM. No special skills are required. Please respond to David Katz or Chuck Yochim if you are able to help with this necessary duty.
