This is one of those times when all of us in the union movement need to stand together and support our sisters and brothers in crisis. On behalf of the NYSUT officers, Board of Directors and our more than 600,000 members, I wrote a letter this week to tell the leaders of the Reynoldsburg (Ohio) EA that NYSUT stands in solidarity with the local membership in its courageous and determined fight to preserve the dignity of public employees and quality public schools for all children.
With the strong support of parents and students, the REA has been on strike for almost two weeks over its efforts to reduce class size, fight a merit pay proposal based on student test scores and address the alarming number of teacher departures.
"We in NYSUT recognize the significance of your fight and admire the solidarity your members have displayed throughout this ordeal," I wrote. "All of our members, parents and concerned community members support our shared goals for smaller class sizes, fair and transparent performance measures for students and teachers and fair wages and benefits for all workers."
